Wall St opens lower on jump in jobless rate

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks opened sharply lower on Friday, with all three major indexes down about 1 percent, after the government reported the unemployment rate in May jumped to its highest in more than 3-1/2 years, renewing fears that economy may tip into recession.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 142.81 points, or 1.13 percent, at 12,461.64. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index

was down 12.72 points, or 0.91 percent, at 1,391.33. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 29.98 points, or 1.18 percent, at 2,519.96.
